This summer, teachers from Mississippi and across the nation will gather together for several exciting residential seminars that explore the issues and methods of teaching about Mississippi, the South, and regional identity. Sponsored by the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and the Center for Continuing Studies and Public Service, the seminars provide a rich menu of topics from Mississippi history to Southern literature, folk art, and the blues taught by top scholars in the field of Southern Studies.
The two-day Mississippi Studies Teachers Seminar will be particularly valuable to ninth-grade Mississippi social studies teachers who will teach a new required course, Mississippi Studies, beginning in the fall of 1995. Funding for ninth-grade teacher resource materials has been generously provided by the Phil Hardin Foundation.
The week-long House of Blues Teachers Institute will bring teachers to Oxford from Los Angeles, New Orleans, Cambridge, Memphis, and the Mississippi and Arkansas Delta to explore the study of Southern culture. The development of this annual teacher s institute has been made possible by the International House of Blues Foundation.
At the University of Southern Maine, 15 teachers from Maine and 15 teachers from Mississippi will study Region and Imagination: New England and the South in a three-week seminar funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. This two-year program will reconvene in Mississippi in the summer of 1996.
