Howorth Lecture to Examine Judge Lucy's Career


The impressive career of centenarian Lucy Somerville Howorth will be the subject of the second Lucy Somerville Howorth Lecture in Women's Studies sponsored by the Sarah Isom Center on Friday, October 20, at 11:00 a.m. in the lecture hall of Barnard Observatory. Martha Swain, Cornaro Professor of History Emerita, Texas Woman's University, will discuss " Leader Alike in Voluntary Associations and the Profession of Law': The Public Role of Lucy Somerville Howorth." Swain's most recent book, Ellen S. Woodward: New Deal Advocate for Women (1995), was awarded the Eudora Welty Prize for best manuscript for 1994 by Mississippi University for Women and the University Press of Mississippi. The lecture is open to the public without charge.
