Train and River Trips
April 13-21, 1996 The Center's inaugural private rail trip across America
aboard the American Orient Express. Stops include Washington, D.C.;
Charlottesville, Virginia; New Orleans, Louisiana; San Antonio, Texas;
Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico; Grand Canyon, Arizona; Los Angeles,
California. Proposed lectures include a history of train travel in the
United States, Westward expansion and the rush for gold, the evolution of
jazz, Jefferson's Virginia, Native Americans of the Southwest, and Sam
Houston's Texas.
September 18-26, 1996 Arkansas River voyage from Memphis
to Tulsa on the Delta Queen. Preliminary itinerary includes stops in
Memphis, Tennessee; four Arkansas sites-Pine Bluff, Little Rock, Petit Jean
Mountain, and Fort Smith-plus Muskogee and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
