Governor's Award for

Lisa N. Howorth of the Center is one of eight Mississippians selected to receive the 1996 Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts. The awards were presented, on February 17, during the eighth annual ceremony at the House Chamber of the Old Capitol Museum in Jackson.
The 1996 awards were presented in seven categories to the following: Lifetime Achievement, Morgan Freeman of Charleston; Artist's Achievement, Dorothy Moore of Jackson; Arts Education, Lisa N. Howorth of Oxford; Individual Arts Patron, Theo Inman Vaughey of Jackson; Corporate Arts Patron, Entergy/ MP&L Company; Arts Partnership, Dan Overly of Ridgeland; Career in the Arts, Sid Graves of Hattiesburg; and Heritage, University Press of Mississippi.
"The program honors those who have made significant contributions to the artistic and cultural life of the state," said Betsy Bradley, executive director of the Mississippi Arts Commission.
The Mississippi Arts Commission, established in 1968 by the Mississippi State Legislature, is the official grantsmaking and service agency for the arts in Mississippi. Funding for the Commission and its programs is provided by the State of Mississippi and the National Endowment for the Arts.
