Call for Papers

The 25th Annual Faulkner & Yoknapatawpha Conference

"Faulkner & America"

The University of Mississippi July 26-31, 1998

T he Department of English is issuing a call for papers for possible presentation at the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference to be held on the Oxford campus of the University of Mississippi July 26-31, 1998. Papers on any aspect of the theme "Faulkner and America" are eligible. We invite papers on such topics as What is the relationship between Faulkner and the American cultural and literary traditions? How does his work make use of and comment upon American history and American myth? In what sense is he an "American" writer-and what are the meanings of that term that would either include him or leave him out? What is the relationship between Faulkner's Southernness and his Americanness? How do these dual memberships conflict and how, and to what effect, do they cohere? What is Faulkner's place in American political life? What is the connection between his identity as a Modernist-an international movement-and his identity as an American?

Authors whose papers are selected for presentation at the conference will receive (1) a waiver of the conference registration fee, (2) lodging at the University Alumni House from Sunday, July 26, through Friday, July 31, and (3) reimbursement of travel expenses within the continental United States ($.31 per mile by automobile or tourist class airfare). Papers presented at the conference will be published by the University Press of Mississippi.

The 14th edition of the University of Chicago Manual of Style should be used as a guide in preparing manuscripts (3,000 to 6,000 words). Three copies of manuscripts must be submitted by January 15, 1998. Notification of selection will be made by March 1, 1998. Manuscripts and inquiries about papers should be addressed to Donald Kartiganer, Department of English, The University of Mississippi, University, MS 38677. Telephone: 601- 232-5793.
