Walter Anderson's Paintings of People Featured in Exhibition
The
Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, offers the
exhibition Seeking the Sublime: The People of Walter Anderson through
May 26, 1997. The exhibition is comprised of more than 140 pieces portraying
people of all ages engaged in various life situations and reveals a seldom-seen
side of the work of the artist, whose reputation has been based primarily
on his brilliant watercolors of the flora and fauna of the Mississippi
Gulf Coast.
Other exhibitions scheduled at the museum include A Succession of Flowers, June 2-September 1, 1997, featuring native plants in watercolors and drawings, and Between the Blades of Grass, November 1-February 1, 1998, focusing on Anderson's observations of the creatures that swell unnoticed in the grasses and marshes of Mississippi.
In
conjunction with a previous exhibit, the University Press of Mississippi
has recently published A Symphony of Animals, a collection of over
200 animal works by Walter Anderson. Copies of the book are available in
bookstores and at the Museum Store. Contact the WAMA, P.O. Box 328, Ocean
