Waking in Mississippi documents the two-year contemporary history of Canton, Mississippi, a town of 11 000 people, 70% of whom are African American. In 1994/95, two community-wide events changed the face of the town forever; the election of Canton's first black mayor in 1994 and the filming of John Grisham's A Time to Kill in 1995. Interviews are conducted with the people of Canton and with those working on the movie, including Samuel Jackson, as the filmmakers try to understand the complicated web of race, history and the media in this Southern town. This film raises contemporary issues of race relations in the South, and the way history effects the present. It also shows the significance of local politics.
