Why Give?

Private philanthropy has played an important role in making the Center for the Study of Southern Culture the premier institution for innovative education and research on the American South. The Center has been enriched by alumni, parents, and friends whose gifts support our mission. To offer a few examples, gifts from individuals to the Center have enabled us to:

  • Provide scholarships, internship stipends, and competitive prizes to students

  • Hire new faculty members, and support faculty research and professional development

  • Present documentary photography exhibitions

  • Conduct oral history projects

  • Establish the Southern Media Archive, a collection of photographs, film footage, and audio recordings of Southerners for use in creative documentary projects

  • Produce award-winning publications, such as the Encyclopedia of Southern Culture

  • Host the weekly Brown Bag Lunch and Lecture Series, which is free and open to the public

  • Deliver a variety of annual conferences, including
    • Oxford Conference for the Book
    • Living Blues Symposium
    • Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference
    • Porter Fortune History Symposium
    • Southern Foodways Symposium
    • Southern Music Symposium
    • Future of the South Symposium

By contributing to the Center, you will ensure that this valuable work will continue to grow.
