Speechreading
"I Can't
Hear You if I Can't See You" is the name of the new "Speechreading"
class that is offered by the University of MS Speech and Hearing
Center through the Department of Communicative Disorders. This course
is offered in hopes of helping hard-of-hearing/deaf individuals
to interact with others and communicate more effectively. Effective
communication is basic to our existence and forms the foundation
of all our relationships. When that foundation starts to crumble
due to a communication impairment, such as hearing loss, the quality
of life diminishes tremendously. Hearing loss can be one of the
most isolating and handicapping conditions in this country. The
"speechreading" class offered by the University of Mississippi
Speech and Hearing Center attempts to teach listeners how to capitalize
upon all senses in order to communicate more effectively. The class
currently meets on Tuesday nights from 5:00 - 6:30 P.M. Each class
builds upon the skills that were taught during the previous classes.
Each class is comprised of three main topics: assistive listening
devices, speechreading/lip-reading and compensatory communication
strategies to use when interacting with others. For more information,
contact the Speech and Hearing Center at (662)915-7271.
