Greetings from The University of Mississippi Department of Student Housing and Residence Life. We are committed to offering a unique opportunity for students to become fully immersed in the university environment through their experience in living on campus. There is no other place that a student can truly learn the meaning of global responsibility than through living with people from different regions, countries and cultures. The housing staff’s goal is to teach the three “C’s” necessary to be successful in the world of work—citizenship, community and compromise. Through more than 1,000 hall programs, leadership opportunities in residence hall government, or becoming a residence hall student staff member, the students living on campus have many opportunities to learn skills outside the classroom and grow personally and professionally.

Research shows that students who reside on campus tend to have higher grade-point averages, are more likely to remain enrolled and are happier students because they are actively involved in university life. In response to this research, the university has a freshman-year residency requirement. We also encourage those sophomores and above who want a more traditional university experience to seriously consider living on campus.

The Department of Student Housing and Residence Life is an auxiliary, meaning that it is self-supporting and does not receive appropriations from state funds. All rent received from students pays for housing functions such as utilities, staff salaries, furniture, supplies, repairs, renovations and new buildings. Funding opportunities are always available to individuals who would like to make contributions to upgrade and/or construct elevators, lobbies, classrooms in residence halls, or buildings.

We invite you to tour our facilities through contacting the Office of Admissions. Our STAR student tour recruiters will be happy to show you their rooms and tell you more about living on campus.

Should you have any questions, please contact us at housing@olemiss.edu or call our office at 662-915-7328. We look forward to your visit.

Sincerely,

Lorinda Krhut
Director of Student Housing and Residence life
