What types of communities are offered?
Students may participate in living-learning communities (LLCs), freshman interest groups (FIGs), or residential colleges (RCs). All are residential clusterings of students who share academic, social, and/or cultural interests. The RCs have live-in faculty who contribute to life in the colleges by programming activities that help students nurture their academic and extracurricular interests.
Communities vary in organization, objectives, and curricula, but they share the following goals:
- Students will develop meaningful relationships with their community peers.
- Students will be able to identify and utilize opportunities to become involved in their respective communities.
- Students will learn to work with others, practice collaboration while recognizing differences, and be committed to ethical action.
- Students will engage in activities that enhance their academic goals and personal interest development.
- Students will develop meaningful connections with faculty and staff.
- Students will be acclimated to campus by moving into the residence halls early. This special early arrival time will allow them to meet faculty/staff mentors and peers.
Where will community participants live?
We are very excited to have our LLC and FIG students living in our brand new, contemporary-style residence halls, Ridge North, Ridge West, and Ridge South. RC students will live in our state-of-the-art residential college facilities, which feature contemporary-style rooms as well as numerous amenities.
Community Mission Statement
These communities are designed to engage students in active learning, while building inclusive communities. Each community is unique, and all will aim to provide spirited, purposeful communities where students can build relationships with faculty and staff, connect with their peers in new ways, and learn more about themselves.
What is the difference between the three types of communities?
Living learning communties (LLCs) connect students with common academic interests. Freshman interest groups (FIGs) connect students with common extracurricular interests. Residential colleges (RCs) connect students in all fields in order to create learning opportunities that are interdisciplinary and mutually strengthening.
Why choose a community?
Studies of residential communities show that students who participate:
- Maintain higher GPAs
- Refine critical thinking skills
- Experience an easier transition into college life
- Connect with the University campus more quickly and more deeply
- Easily engage with students who have similar interests
- Develop a focused support network of students, advisors, and professors
- Have increased faculty/staff contact outside of the classroom.
