How do I receive mail?
The United States Postal Service does not deliver mail to the residence halls. Students should rent a Post Office Box from the Post Office in the Student Union. The Department of Student Housing and Residence Life is not responsible for delivering mail.

How do I mail a package to my student?
As a service to residents, the Student Housing and Residence Life office in Miller Hall accepts packages from carriers such as UPS, FedEx and DHL. Packages should be addressed as follows:


Student's Name
Miller Hall, Rebel Drive
Room Number and Residence Hall Name
University, MS 38677


Our office will contact the student, utilizing the student's campus e-mail account, when the package comes in. If the package is not picked up within two weeks of arrival, the parcel will be returned to the sender.

How do I find the measurements of the room that my student will be staying in?
Measurements for all double rooms are posted on our Web site. If you do not find the measurement you are looking for, please e-mail housing@olemiss.edu us or visit our model rooms, opened during orientation in the summer.

How do I get a problem in my room repaired?
When something breaks in your room or something is not working in a residence hall such as a sink or shower, you may submit online with your Webid and Password , call Fix-it at 662-915-7329 or e-mail fixit@olemiss.edu. From there, the problem will be turned over to our maintenance staff and fixed as soon as possible. Since our office is only open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., all calls received after these hours will be put on the next day's agenda.  If there is an emergency, please contact your RA or Hall Director.

Are there designated freshman residence halls?
The University of Mississippi does not have designated freshman residence halls.

When can I tour the halls?
If you would like to tour our halls during the academic year, please call the Office of Admissions at 662-915-7226 or visit their website to set up a tour with our STAR program. During summer orientation, our office opens a model room in each hall for student and parent viewing. Hours for these halls are announced at orientation.

How do I change rooms?
The room change process occurs in two phases, in-hall changes and between building changes.  In-hall room changes occur on the 12th class day.  You will need to speak to your hall director to see what spaces are available and get the proper paper work to move.  Between building changes occur the Sunday night after in-hall changes.  You may contact the Office of Student Housing to find out what spaces are available in each building.  Any other room changes are processed on a case-by-case basis and you will need to see your Area Coordinator for more infomation.

When will I get my housing assignment?
All students, including incoming freshmen, who turn in their housing applications before March 15 will be placed in the first round of assignments and will receive information concerning their rooms and roommates at the beginning of June. Any housing applications received after March 15 will be placed in the second round of assignments, and will receive information concerning their rooms and roommates around the middle of July.

What if I don't get along with my roommate?
If you do not get along with your roommate, the first person you should talk to is your resident assistant. If the problem persists, you should go to your hall director.

How do I order a loft?
If you are wanting to loft the bed in your room, you will need to pre-order a loft from Lofts, LLC. For safety, these are the only lofts approved for the Ole Miss residence halls. Homemade lofts and cinder blocks are not allowed.

Lofts are not required to bunk the beds. Bunking pins are available at the front desk on move-in day if you want to bunk the beds.

Can I hang pictures, mirrors, etc., with nails or screws?
You may hang pictures and mirrors in your room but NOT with screws. Students may use a nondamaging wall adhesive. Any holes or missing paint found in a student’s room will be noted, and a fine will be charged.

What size microwave may I have in my room?
Students may have a microwave with 750 watts or less.

Microfridges are provided in Guess Hall and Residential College. Student Housing does not have microfridges available to rent. Students wanting a microwave and/or refrigerator must bring one along. Most discount stores, such as Wal-Mart and Target, and home stores, such as Home Depot and Lowe’s, carry small refrigerators and microwaves.

What size refrigerator may I have in my room?
Students may have a refrigerator 4 cubic feet or smaller.

May I bring my own loft?

May I have a wireless router in my room?
Students are not allowed to have wireless routers in their rooms. Students found with wireless routers may be subject to fines and judicial action.

Does the closet in my room have doors?
Closets in Martin, Stockard, Deaton, Hefley and Kincannon do not have doors and require the student to purchase a curtain if they wish to cover their closet. Closets in all other halls have doors.

May I remove the chair from my room if I bring my own?
All furniture found in a student’s room is property of The University of Mississippi and is required to stay in the room at all times. If furniture is removed, a student will face fines and possible judicial action.

If I make my room single, may I have the extra furniture removed?
If a student is placed in a double room and during consolidation decides to make the room private, both sets of furniture must remain in the room. If furniture is removed, a student will face fines and possible judicial action.

What is consolidation?
Consolidation occurs after the Student Housing office assesses the vacancies in our buildings. If a student is found to not have a roommate in a designated double room, he or she will be sent a letter and given three options: The student may either find a roommate, have the housing office assign a roommate or pay to make his or her room private.

May I put my name on a waiting list for a room?
The Student Housing office does not keep waiting lists for any residence halls.

I'm an incoming freshman. When will I know my housing assignment?

All beds are extra-long twin beds. They are 80 inches by 39 inches.

    • Weapons including but not limited to BB guns, air pistols, paintball or pellet guns, knives, start for martial arts, and guns of any type

What are the requirements for a commuter student?

Full-time single students who have completed fewer than 30 semester hours are required to live on campus in the residence halls for one academic year (for two terms – Fall and Spring semesters only).  Although it is required that all freshman live on campus, exceptions may be made for those students who live at home with their parents / guardians within a 60 mile radius of campus and commute.  A commuter request must be filed with the Office of Student Housing and Residence Life in Miller Hall, no later than August 1st for the full academic year.  For those enrolling in the Spring semester, no later than December 1st.  Please note:  Students released to commute are required to reside at home with their parent or legal guardian.   Students released to commute and found not residing with a parent or legal guardian will be in violation of University policy and will be billed for housing and referred into the judicial system.

Cable, Phone, and Internet?

Both wireless and ethernet Internet connections are available in all residence hall rooms.  Since wireless is available to all students, wireless routers are prohibited from the residence halls. 

All rooms have a phone line provided for the student.  Students should bring a phone with them to hook-up in the room.  This line is often used by University administration to contact students. 

Basic cable is provided in all rooms.  Residence Life Cinema also provides movies for students free of charge on Channel 80.  Students can purchase expanded cable and/or movie channels through telecommunications.  For more information on what that entails, please visit the telecommunication Website:

Renters Insurance?

The University of Mississippi assumes no liability for damage or loss of personal property. Books, clothing, electronics, and other personal items will not be replaced by The University of Mississippi regardless of the cause of damage or loss.

To make sure your items are protected from theft, fire, and flood, you are encouraged to purchase property or renters insurance through your homeowner’s insurance policy or through an independent agent.
