Frequent Questions
Application and Room Selection Process Information
- Upon receiving your letter of acceptance to the University of Mississippi, you may complete the application online by logging onto my.olemiss.edu.
- A $75 nonrefundable application fee is required for your application to be complete.
- You can view a copy of your contract here.
- Housing applications are accepted until school starts, but a priority system exists based on the date your application is completed.
- An early priority allows you to choose your room earlier. Students with earlier room-selection time slots have the most residence hall room choices.
- If you’re not sure where you want to live, you should know that all of our traditional residence halls are very similar. You may visit the 'ACCOMMODATIONS' section of our website to look at the buildings and their room and floor layouts. Freshmen reside in all of our residence halls.
- The Department of Student Housing and Residence Life does not keep waiting lists for any residence halls or rooms. During the summer, students may continually check their accounts to see if there are any openings in a specific building. During the academic year, spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- If you are interested in living in a residential college, you must complete the general housing application, pay the application fee, and complete the Residential College application at my.olemiss.edu.
- The priority application date for the Residential College South and Luckyday Residential College is January 15. Applications will still be accepted after this date, but preference will go to students who submitted applications prior to January 15.
- The residential colleges require students to have a specific meal plan. This meal plan allows students to eat an unlimited number of meals in the residential college dining hall. Students are also allowed to eat up to 100 meals at other dining facilities on campus.
- All residential college rooms have a contemporary design with in-room bathrooms. Freshmen live in double rooms with one other roommate. Upperclassmen have the opportunity to reserve larger rooms. Students never share a bathroom with more than one other person.
- Students who live in the residential colleges must have roommates who are members of the same residential college.
- The first round of residential college acceptance e-mails will go out before room selection begins.
- Your roommate and you will need to mutually request each other prior to room selection. The student who goes into the system to select the room will need to book themselves and their roommate(s) into the room. The system will not automatically pull in a roommate if you request one after booking your room.
- If you have a requested roommate, your selection date will be based on the average of the dates your applications were submitted.
- Students without requested roommates may use the roommate finder in the housing application to find a roommate or may select an open bedspace in any room. If a student without a roommate selectes a bedspace in an empty room, he or she must understand that any applicable student may select the other bedspace.
- Roommate requests may be submitted at any time once the housing application is complete.
- Basic information will be available to a person when selecting a room where someone else is living. This information is based on the questions that students complete when filling out the housing application.
- You will receive the name and email address of your roommate once you have selected to live with that person.
- Consolidation occurs after the housing office assesses the vacancies in the residence halls. If a student is found to be living in a double room without a roommate, he or she will receive a letter outlining three options: The student may either find a roommate, have the housing office assign a roommate, or pay to make the room private. If we have students living in temporary housing, the student will not have the option to make the room private.
- Commuter Request Form
- Full-time single students who have completed fewer than 30 semester hours are required to live on campus in the residence halls for one academic year (for two terms – fall and spring semesters only).
- Although it is required that all freshman live on campus, exceptions may be made for those students who live at home with their parents/guardians within a 60-mile radius of campus and commute.
- A commuter request must be filed with the Department of Student Housing and Residence Life no later than August 1 for the full academic year. For those enrolling in the spring semester, the deadline is December 1.
- Please note: Students released to commute are required to reside at home with their parent(s) or legal guardian(s). Students released to commute and found not residing with a parent or legal guardian will be in violation of University policy and will be billed for housing and referred into the judicial system.
- Students are billed by August for the fall semester.
- Students are billed by December for the spring semester.
- Students are billed by May for summer housing.
- All charges are billed to a student’s bursar account. We do not accept payment in the student housing office.
- If you do not think you will be compatible with the roommate in your selected room, you may select a different room as long as room swap is available in the housing application. It is against policy to bully or bribe a person out of a room or ask them to leave because you do not like them.
- You will have the ability to change your assignment until early August. Once the academic year begins, information about room changes will be announced. Room changes generally take place in the first few weeks of school.
- If you do not get along with your roommate once you move in, the first person you should talk to is your resident assistant (RA). If the problem persists, you should speak with your residence hall director (RHD) or resident manager (RM).
