Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ:

How much does it cost to live in the RC compared to the other residence halls?

It costs a little more to live in the RC.  Here’s a comparison among several halls:

Stockard/ Martin Hall:                $3800/ academic year

Hefley/ Deaton Halls:                  $4000/ academic year

The Residential College:              $4900/ academic year

What do I get for that extra $1000 or so a year?

We realize that $1000 is no small amount of money.  You get the following for your money:

  1. -A double suite with a private bathroom and thermostat

  2. -24/7 access to the following amenities:

                - Fitness room

                - Computer Lab

                - Library

                - Study rooms

  1. -Daily access to the music practice/ recording room and the fully equipped teaching kitchen.

What’s in the music practice room?

The music room holds an electric piano, a drum set, microphone stands and cables, two monitors, and a digital interface for recording into a MacBook.  We even have directional and condenser mikes.

Where do I eat?

The RC dining facility, located on the lower level of the RC, is open 7 days a week.  The RC meal plan is mandatory for all RC members, and although it costs $400 more per semester than the “all-access” plan elsewhere on campus, you get unlimited meals, snacks, and drinks---- as much as you want, whenever you want, of the best food on campus---- in our dining facility during regular business hours.  You also get 100 meals to use elsewhere on campus, 10 of which can be used to treat family and friends to meals in the RC.

All this is cool, but why is it called a college?

The RC is a residential college as opposed to a residential hall because a lot goes on here that is directly tied to your academic experience at the university.

- A professor, Dr. Dan O’Sullivan, and his family live at the RC.

  1. -A whole host of other professors (who don’t live here) come around to tutor you, teach you things from yoga to French cooking, answer questions, offer advice, etc.

  2. -Classes are held in our classroom, library, and conference room.

  3. -Regular study groups meet to help students learn from each other in critical courses. Here an example schedule:

BIOLOGY:                MONDAYS, 6-7 PM, RC CLASSROOM

MATH:                      TUESDAYS, 6-8 PM, RC CLASSROOM

GERMAN:                 THURSDAYS, 4-5 PM, RC CLASSROOM

SPANISH:                  SUNDAYS, 4-5 PM, RC CLASSROOM

  1. -Groups meet in the RC Dining Commons to practice foreign languages.  Depending on the day, you could practice Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish!

Who can apply and how can I apply?

Any full-time undergraduate student may apply.  The application is found under the Undergraduate Supplemental Application section of MyOleMiss portal.

Who decides who gets in and what do they look for in the application?

A student committee makes recommendations to Dr. O’Sullivan about who should live in the RC.  You don’t need to receive a 36 ACT score or be valedictorian of your school to get in, but you need to be serious about your studies.  You also need to show us that you are “interested and interesting.”  What can you bring to our community? What sets you apart from everyone else?

Do I need to apply every year that I want to live at the RC?

Nope! As we say at the RC, once a member, always a member.  You will have to fill out a general housing application and pay your fee every year, but your membership in the college is assured.  You can stay as many of your undergraduate years at the RC as you like.  And if you decide to study abroad, take an internship, or live in a Greek house for a year, we can save your spot for you!
