STUDENT LONG DISTANCE SERVICE INFORMATION
  • How do I get a Long Distance Access Number?
    Go to the Telecommunications Center located in Baxter Hall, bring your student ID card.
  • What calls am I charged for?
    Only the calls that were completed using your Long Distance Access Number. These calls are billed to your Bursar account. Each month you will get an itemized bill in your Bursar bill.
  • Where can my Long Distance Access Number card be used?
    Only on the University's telephone system (dorms, academic and administrative buildings).
  • I can not make an International call.
    You have to inform the Telecommunications Center that you need International access.
  • I lost my Long Distance Access Number card, what do I do?
    Go the Telecommunications Center immediately, cancel your old Long Distance Access Number and get a new Long Distance Access Number.
  • There are some calls on my long distance bill that I did not make, what do I do?
    Bring your bill to the Telecommunications Center immediately and get a new Long Distance Access Number.
  • My roommate wants to use my Long Distance Access Number.
    Do not let anyone use your Long Distance Access Number. If you let someone else use it, you are responsible for collecting the money from them.
  • Do I have to sign up for a University Long Distance Access Number?
    No, you can use other long distance calling cards by following the dialing instructions on the card.
  • Do I have to sign up for a new Long Distance Access Number each semester?
    No, you can use the same Long Distance Access Number each semester.
  • I am a returning student and have had a Long Distance Access Number from a previous semester or I am a freshman and have attended a student orientation session and have gotten a Long Distance Access Number. How do I get my Long Distance Access Number turned on at the beginning of each semester?
    If your tuition is prepaid, your Long Distance Access Number will be on when you arrive on campus. If you have to go through registration, stop by the Telecommunications Center table to reactivate your Long Distance Access Number.
  • Do I have to deactivate my Long Distance Access Number at the end of each semester?
    No, at the end of each semester all student Long Distance Access Numbers are deactivated.
  • I am moving out of the dorm and I have a Long Distance Access Number, what should I do?
    Go to the Telecommunications Center in Baxter hall to discontinue your Long Distance Access Number.
  • Do I have call waiting on my dorm room phone?
    Yes, to answer the second call, press the switch hook or the flash button on a cordless phone, wait for the three short beeps and then press *9.
  • Can I use an answering machine in my dorm room.
    Yes, although some answering machines may not recognize distinct ringing. If your machine does not recognize distinct ringing, call the Telecommunications Center (5922) for further instructions.
  • The phone is not working properly in my dorm room, what do I do?
    Notify your RA or Hall director. You do not call the Telecommunications Center to report the problem.
  • How do I make a off-campus directory assistance call?
    You have to use a University Long Distance Access Number or calling card to reach off-campus directory assistance. To use a University Long Distance Access Number to obtain Mississippi information, dial 9-1411-six digit access number. For out of state information 9-1-xxx(area code)-555-1212-six digit access number. To use a calling card dial 9-0-411-credit card number or 9-0-xxx-555-1212-credit card number.
CABLE TV INFORMATION

  • How do I sign up for extended/premium cable tv services in my dorm room?
    Go to the Telecommunications Center located in Baxter Hall and sign up for the extended/premium services that you want.
  • I am moving to another dorm room, how do I move my cable service?
    Go to the Telecommunications Center located in Baxter Hall and fill out a "move" form.
  • How am I billed for my extended/premium cable tv services?
    The monthly cable charges are billed to your Bursar account. The charges are billed at the first of each month, for example you are billed on the 1st of April for April's charges. If you add services in the middle of the month, that month's charges are pro-rated and placed on your Bursar account. This means that if you sign up in the middle of the month, there will be two cabl e charges on your Bursar's bill, one for the partial month and one for the next month.
  • My roommate and I want different cable tv services, can we both sign up for what we want?
    Yes, each student can sign up for the cable services that they want and it will be billed to their Bursar account.
  • My cable is not working properly, what do I do?
    First make sure that you have programmed your tv to receive the proper channels. Check the cable connection on the back of the tv and the wall. If the problem still exists, call the Telecommunications Center. If a technician makes a service call and the problem is in the tv, you will be charged for a service call.
  • I am moving out of the dorm and I have extended/premium cable tv services what should I do?
    Go to the Telecommunications Center in Baxter hall and discontinue the extended/premium cable tv services. Your Bursar account will be credited for any unused services.
  • Do I have to cancel my extended/premium cable tv services at the end of each semester?
    No, at the end of each semester all extended/premium cable tv services to the dorms are cut off.
DEPARTMENTAL/FACULTY/STAFF TELEPHONE SERVICE

  • How do I get a Long Distance Access Number to make personal long distance calls from my office?
    Go to the Telecommunications Center located in Baxter Hall or fax a memo with your staff id number indicating that you want a personal Long Distance Access Number.
  • How do I get a Long Distance Access Number to make business calls from my office?
    Get permission from the signatory officer of your department, then fax or mail a signed memo to the Telephone Exchange indicating who is to get the number and what departmental account is to be charged.
  • How do I get a credit card to make long distance calls when I am away on University business?
    Get permission from the signatory officer of your department, then fax or mail a signed memo to the Telephone Exchange indicating who is to get the calling card and what departmental account is to be charged.
  • My phone is not working correctly, what should I do?
    First try another phone, if the line is still not working properly, call the Telecommunications Center (7464) and report the problem.
  • We need a phone line added to the department.
    Get permission from the signatory officer of your department, then fax or mail a signed memo to the Telephone Exchange indicating what is needed, building and room, and what departmental account is to be charged.
  • We need a phone number moved to another office.
    Get permission from the signatory officer of your department, then fax or mail a signed memo to the Telephone Exchange indicating where the phone number needs to be moved and what departmental account is to be charged.
  • I am transferring to another department, do I need to inform the Telecommunications Center?
    Yes, you need to transfer your departmental Long Distance Access Number and your long distance credit card to the proper departmental account number.
  • I am leaving the University, do I need to inform the Telephone Exchange?
    Yes, you need to cancel your personal and departmental Long Distance Access Numbers and your long distance Credit Card.
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

  • What are the hours of the Telecommunications Center?
    Monday thru Friday 8am to 5pm
  • I need to send/receive a fax, where do I go?
    Come to the Telecommunications Center in Baxter Hall. The fax number is 601-232-7010. The charge to receive a fax is $.20 a page. To send a fax it is $.50 a page plus the long distance call charge.
  • How do I make a off-campus directory assistance call?
    You have to use a University Long Distance Access Number or calling card to reach off-campus directory assistance. To use a University Long Distance Access Number to obtain Mississippi information, dial 9-1411-six digit access number. For out of state information 9-1-xxx(area code)-555-1212-six digit access number. To use a calling card dial 9-0-411-credit card number or 9-0-xxx-555-1212-credit card number.
  • I cannot make a long distance call within the state using my University ATT Calling Card. How can I make this call?
    You will need to dial 1-800-CALLATT or 10288 before making you call. IF you cannot do this, call the operator and tell him/her that you want to make a long distance call using an AT&T card.
