"Lysistrata is one of the greatest comedies ever written." Curtain Up
"...the comedy remains, a generous, shining affirmation of confidence in the ultimate sanity of mankind.... " Dudley Fitts
Written in 411 BC, Lysistrata is the third and last play in Aristophanes' War and Peace series. Lysistrata gathers the women of Greece to end the twenty-one year Peloponnesian War by denying their husbands the pleasures of their marital beds until a peace treaty is signed. While the women hide in the Acropolis, the men begin to lose their will to fight and eventually give in to the women's demands for peace. Featuring classical Greek choruses, elaborate costumes, and even puppetry, Ole Miss Theatre's production is a timeless interpretation of ancient theatre that remains as relevant, and funny, now as when it was written.
