The magnetic observatory was a small, lead-lined brick structure built in 1860. As part of Barnard's plan it was intended for the study of terrestrial magnetism and meteorology. Due to the Civil War the structure was never used for this propose.

The original use of the structure was forgotten when during the war the University of Mississippi became a hospital and the Magnetic Observatory became a morgue. Afterwards it was known as the "Dead House" and was called by that name until its destruction in the 1958.

Tradition states that seven hundred soldiers from both sides were carried across campus from the Magnetic Observatory to the cemetery.

Due to the war Chancellor Barnard was never able to realize his goals for the University of Mississippi. With his dreams destroyed he sought a new position. Barnard was President of Columbia College 1864 -1889.The Magnetic Observatory was destroyed in the 1940's.
