Artist Statement

INTRODUCTION
This special exhibition, Art of the Falkners, has been in process for some time now. It began as an idea for an exhibition of the art work of Maud Falkner that would be a complement to the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference, and grew to be what you see presently in the Fortune Gallery at the University Museum: a small, but thoughtfully selected exhibition that we hope will serve to expand appreciation of the artistic capacities of the Falkner family.

By including the art works created by several family members, namely Maud, William, and John, the exhibition provides the viewer with a wider perspective of the talent that this well-known family possesses. As you walk through this exhibition, you will encounter a variety of subjects represented by line drawings, lovingly rendered family portraits, copies of Old Master paintings, as well as images of the "vanishing South" as portrayed by John and Maud. Given the differences in the artists and in the "Souths" they represent, viewers will see something of the depth and range of vision within a single, remarkably talented family.

Our heartfelt thanks to those who so generously agreed to part with these art works from their collections, and, indeed, the walls of their homes, for the duration of this exhibition.
