During the month
of October the University Museum will host an exhibition of culinary history, "Landmarks of Southern Cuisine: The Cookbooks of Lena Richard and
Mary Land." This exhibition of photographs, cookbooks, writing on
food-related topics, cooking illustrations and menus document Louisiana
and Creole food traditions of the mid- twentieth century.
In conjunction with the Louisiana culinary exhibition we have two guest
speakers you wont want to miss. Karen Leathem, the exhibition curator,
will present "New Orleans Cuisine History" on Thursday, October
17th beginning at 12:00. Karen is the Managing Editor of "Atlanta
History: A Journal of Georgia and the South." Published by the Atlanta
History Center.
Jessica Harris, a culinary historian and a professor of English at Queens
College, NYC, will give a lecture on "African American Catering Traditions,"
Monday, October 21st, 4:30 - 5:00. hors doeuvres will be served.
The Newcomb Archives and the New Orleans Culinary History Group organized
this exhibition of "Two Women and their Cookbooks." The Newcomb
Archives house over 2,000 cookbooks and manuscripts on the culinary history
of the south.
