The main goal and purpose of the University Police Department, located in Kinard Hall, is to provide service and protection to The University of Mississippi's campus, properties, staff, faculty, and students. The five divisions which compose the University Police Department-patrol, investigation, crime prevention, security staff, and traffic/support-are an integrated team striving to achieve excellence in police protection and to ensure a high quality of student-faculty life by promoting a tranquil, safe atmosphere conducive to the objectives of the University. The department is dedicated to the protection of the University properties to ensure the beauty, security, and safe function of the campus grounds and resources.

Students must assume responsibility for their own personal safety and security of their personal property by practicing common sense and good judgment.

One of UPD's responsibilities is handling traffic. Each student who keeps a motor vehicle on the campus must have it properly registered with the office of the University Police Department. As at most universities, Ole Miss parking spaces are at a premium. Students are restricted from driving cars in the main part of campus during class hours. The best suggestion is to leave your car in the hall parking lot and walk or ride your bike to classes. A bicycle is an ideal means of transportation at Ole Miss and in Oxford.

If you are worried about getting back to your residence after a late night at the Library, call the University Police Department at 915-7234.

Transportation and Parking

Vehicles parked on campus must display a valid parking permit purchased from the University Police Department located in Kinard Hall. Students may park on campus only in designated areas. The areas around administration and class buildings are closed to student traffic between 7:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Organizational Philosophy

To prevent crime and disorder as an alternative to their repression by force and severity of punishment; to maintain at all times a relationship with the public; and to recognize always that the best measure of police effectiveness is the absence of crime and disorders and not the visible evidence of police actions in dealing with them.

Mission:

To protect and serve the University by promoting and maintaining a safe and secure environment.

Values:

INTEGRITY: For the most part, the community's trust and confidence in the police department will
be earned by the integrity of its police officers. All UPD officers are expected to conduct themselves in
a manner that is fair, ethical and legal and which exhibits a sense of duty and honor for the position
entrusted to them.

JUSTICE: The administration of law and order is based upon the ideal of justice for all and the
preservation of constitutional rights. The fulfillment of that ideal requires a commitment by police
officers to protect citizens and to strive to ensure that citizens will be treated with respect, dignity
and fairness.

SERVICE: As members of the law enforcement profession, UPD recognizes the significance of
serving the public. As such, all UPD employees are duty bound in their commitment to provide
excellent services.

TRUST: The University community has entrusted UPD to exercise its authority with discretion,
good judgment, respect and a commitment to honesty, justice, and diversity. Each member of UPD
strives to build upon the trust and confidence of the students, staff, faculty, and general public.

Vision:

The vision of The University of Mississippi Police Department is to become a recognized leader
in higher education law enforcement by providing the public with quality police service and protection.

Goals:

In an effort to transform this vision into reality, The University of Mississippi Police Department has
set the following goals:

The recruitment, selection, training, and fitness of competent and ethical police officers.
The efficient and effective management of law enforcement personnel and department resources.
