3 Crimes Friday Morning, Jan. 18 in Oxford/Lafayette County

Oxford Police Department apprehended William Calvin Smith, 31, on Friday, January 18, 2007, in connection with 3 crimes that reportedly occurred earlier in the morning [starting at approximately 6:00 a.m.].

Mr. Smith, of Oxford, was charged for his alleged involvement in an early morning burglary at Brittany Apartments. He reportedly fled the apartment when he realized the resident was in the apartment.

He was also charged for a similar situation at Cambridge Station Apartments. There he again reportedly fled the apartment when he realized the residents were home.

Shortly afterwards a female reported that while walking her dog on South Lamar Boulevard a male in a vehicle pulled over and asked her for directions. She stated that after a brief exchange, the male exited his vehicle and assaulted her [struck her about the face] and then left the scene.

Based upon the victims' description of the violator and his vehicle, OPD officers pulled over a matching vehicle on University Avenue later Friday morning. Mr. Smith has been charged with two counts of burglary and one charge of attempted sexual battery. Oxford Police Department and Lafayette County Sheriff's Department are the investigating agencies.
