Crime Alert

Auto Burglaries

UPD has received several reports in recent weeks of parked vehicles being broken into and items stolen from them. Oxford Police Department has also received several similar reports in their jurisdiction in recent weeks.

As late as Saturday, December 1, at 3:06 a.m., an alert student notified UPD by use of a Code Blue (emergency phone) of a male acting suspiciously on North Lane behind Brown Hall. UPD officers immediately responded to the area and located the suspicious male. Investigation revealed he had in fact broken into a vehicle parked in the vicinity. The individual, a non-student, was charged with auto burglary.

Students are encouraged to take precautions not to become a victim:
*Always lock your vehicle.
*Do not leave valuables exposed inside your vehicle [a locked door won't be enough - in many
cases on campus and in Oxford in recent weeks entry into the vehicle was made by breaking a window].
*Don't pack your vehicle the night before you plan to leave town.
*Park in well-lighted areas.
*Immediately report any suspicious persons or vehicles to UPD -- use one of the Code Blue emergency telephones on campus or call UPD at 662-915-4911 or 662-915-7234.
