Mission
Statement:
The mission of the Natural Products Utilization
Research Unit is to develop natural products for
uses in agriculture in order to produce more
toxicologically benign pest management tools and
to improve the nutriceutical value of crops.A
secondary mission is to do fundamental research
to aid in the development of alternative crops
for production of pharmaceuticals and botanical
supplements.Rationale:
Natural products offer a
vast, virtually untapped reservoir of chemical
compounds with many potential uses. One of
these uses is in agriculture to manage pests with
less risk than with synthetic compounds that are
toxicologically and environmentally
undesirable. The National Center for
Natural Products Research (NCNPR) offers
ARS the opportunity to leverage and focus its
resources in the area of natural products for
agriculture. Finding the appropriate use
for a natural product is extremely difficult
without a broad array of scientists who can
search for many potential uses. Many of the
compounds that NCNPR has
isolated could be valuable agricultural
chemicals. The assets of both ARS and NCNPR are
leveraged to greatly increase the probability of
discoveries that will impact agriculture.
Furthermore, ARS expertise is useful in the
development of pharmaceuticals from plant
resources, creating alternative crops for small
farms.
Unit History:
The NPURU began its work in
Oxford, MS at the National Center for Natural
Products Research (NCNPR) in
October of 1996. The NCNPR is located on
the campus of the University
of Mississippi, between
the chemistry and pharmacy buildings. The
research unit is physically located in the NCNPR,
along with University of Mississippi and Research
Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences scientists
whose primary mission is discovery of natural
products for pharmaceutical uses. The NPURU
is under the Mid-South Area Office of ARS, located in Stoneville, MS.

ARS Mission Statement
The United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA) prohibits discrimination in
its programs on the basis of race, color,
national origin, sex, religion, age, disability,
political beliefs, and marital or familial
status. (Not all prohibited bases apply to all
programs.) Persons with disabilities who
require alternative means of communication of
program information (Braille, large print,
audiotape, etc.) should contact the USDA's TARGET
Center at 202-720-1127 (TDD). USDA is an equal
opportunity employer.
USDA [Agricultural Research
Service] is committed to making its web sites
accessible to all USDA customers and
employees. All of the agency web sites are
undergoing review and redesign as necessary to
ensure that they meet or exceed the requirements
of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Many of our web sites currently meet the Section
508 accessibility standards. Furthermore,
USDA [Agricultural Research Service] continues to
work on making all web sites accessible.
Thank you very much for your patience through
this redesign process. If you have any
comments or suggestions for improvement, please
contact the Web Master of this page.
