MINUTES OF THE ACADEMIC COUNCIL
2:30 p.m., Monday, November 4, 1996, in the Board Room of the Lyceum
PRESENT: Dr. Walton, Deans Abadie, Boxx, Chambless, Champion, Smith Davis, Meador, Dr. Don Cole for Dean Dingerson, Dr. Wilson for Dean Roberts, Dr. Gilbert,
Mr. Stricker, Dr. Clark, Dr. Staton
ABSENT: Dean Dingerson, Dean Roberts, Mr. Blazakis, Mr. Posey
ALSO PRESENT: Dr. Del Hawley
1. Reaction to Minutes of the Undergraduate Council Meetings of September
13, September 27, and October 4. Upon a motion by Dean Boxx, seconded by Dr. Cole, the
minutes of the Undergraduate Council meeting of September 13, 1996, were approved. Upon a
motion by Dean Abadie, seconded by Dean Davis, a motion was passed to approve the September
27, 1996, minutes of the Undergraduate Council. However, the revision requiring a 2.0 g.p.a. for
graduation would not become effective unless and until such time as the University has an
academic re-start program or academic bankruptcy program. There was a 6 to 3 vote in favor of
the motion. Upon a motion by Dean Boxx, seconded by Dr. Cole, the Undergraduate Council
minutes of October 4, 1996, were approved.
2. Reaction to Minutes of the Graduate Council Meetings of September 6,
October 4, October 11, and October 25. Upon a motion by Dr. Cole, seconded by Dean Smith,
the September 6, 1996, minutes of the Graduate Council were approved. Upon a motion by Dr.
Cole, seconded by Dean Boxx, the Graduate Council minutes of October 4, 1996, were approved.
Upon a motion by Dr. Gilbert, seconded by Dr. Cole, the Graduate Council minutes of October
11, 1996, were approved. Upon a motion by Dean Boxx, seconded by Dean Chambless,
Graduate Council minutes of October 25, 1996, were approved.
3. Special Request to Add New Undergraduate Course: Psychology 99. Upon a
motion by Dean Abadie, seconded by Dr. Cole, a new course, Psychology 99, was approved (see
4. F.A.P. Barnard Distinguished Professorships. The Academic Council, in
accepting the October 25, 1996, minutes of the Graduate Council, has decided not to go further
with the expansion of the Barnard Professorships (see Attachment #2).
5. Donor and Scholar Events. It was the consensus of the deans that a day for
donors and scholars should take place, at most, every other year. There was sentiment that when
donors visit campus we could have something informal for them whereby they could meet their
scholars. The Academic Council preferred that to a more formal scholars day program.
6. Academic Calendar. There was a consensus of the Academic Council to comply
with the request of Dr. Mullendore to begin the fall session on Wednesday, August 20, 1996.

This would involve extending the calendar one day, so that the last day of class will be December
8, and examinations will be from December 9 - December 13, 1996.
7. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 4:18 p.m.
