MINUTES OF THE ACADEMIC COUNCIL

1:30 p.m., Monday, October 9, 1995, in the Board Room of the Lyceum

PRESENT: Dr. Walton, Deans Abadie, Boxx, Westerfield, Smith, Roberts, Meador, Dr. Don Cole for Dean Dingerson, Dr. Jim Chambless for Dean Payne, Dr. Dale Flesher for Dean Davis, Dr. Bob Hackett for Dr. Ray, Dr. Clark, Mr. Posey, and Dr. Staton

ALSO PRESENT: Ms. Mandy Jones and Dr. Dan Mattern

1. Reaction to Minutes of the Undergraduate Council Meeting of

September 1. Upon a motion by Dr. Flesher, seconded by Dean Roberts, the minutes of the Undergraduate Council meeting of September 1 were accepted.

2. Undergraduate Catalog Draft Revisions. Dr. Mattern presented the revisions to the Undergraduate Catalog which had been approved by the Undergraduate Council and amendments were made to those revisions. Dr. Mattern will present a new version for the Academic Council for their approval at its next meeting.

3. Sabbatical Leave Policy. A few questions arose as to matters of interpretation in the Sabbatical Leave Policy. One question concerned eligibility. Specifically, are chairs eligible to serve? It was agreed that Dr. Dingerson would be asked to have the drafting committee come together to solve this question. The second problem concerned the eligibility of persons who themselves are applying for sabbatical.

4. United Way. Dean Roberts announced the kick-off for United Way will be October 10, 1995, at 9:00 o'clock. Dean Roberts is chairing the campus campaign.

5. Teacher Evaluations. Dr. Walton announced that the teacher

evaluations for the fall semester would be November 6 - 17, 1995. Academic Council agreed with the dates for future teacher evaluations.

6. Final Examination Period. Academic Council approved the final examination periods for Spring, 1996, Fall, 1996, and Spring, 1997, subject to typographical corrections (see Attachment #1).

7. New Administrative Organization. Dean Roberts asked how the proposed administrative organization would impact the deans and it was decided that there would be a discussion on this at the next meeting.

8. Resignation of Dean Payne. Dr. Walton announced that Dean Payne had resigned effective December 1995 and that Dr. Jim Chambless will be the Interim Dean of the School of Education, effective January 1, 1996.
