Minutes of the Undergraduate Council

Present: Dr. Ann Canty, Dr. Walt Cleland, Dr. David McCaffrey, Dr. Wade Irvin, Dr. Angela Raines, Dr. Jeff Watt, Dr. Victoria Bush, Ms. Jan Bounds, Dr. Ellen Lackey, Mr. Eddie Upton
Absent: Dr. Charlotte Fant, Dr. Mark Wilder, Ms. Debra Riley-Huff, Ms. Ruth Mauldin, Dr. Lynne Murchison, Dr. Maurice Eftink
1. Approval of Minutes.
The chair announced that Chancellor Khayat had approved the minutes of the May 4 meeting and the email ballot minutes of July 20, without exception.
2. Discussion of Environmental Studies 101 as a Humanities Course (see Attachment #3).
The discussion regarding the approval of Environmental
Studies 101 as a humanities course was based on the statement of content in the
course provided by Dr. Ann Fisher-Wirth, as well as the course description. The Council members agreed that the content
of the course will fulfill the requirement for a humanities course. Council members expressed an objection to the
title since it sounds very much as if the course is a science course. Several members of the Council asked whether
or not an environmental studies minor is planned. The chair

5. Suspension of the Paralegal Certificate Program – Effective Fall 2007 (see Attachment #4).
On a motion by Dr. Bush and a second by Dr. Watt, the suspension of the Paralegal Certificate Program was unanimously approved.
6. Petition of Heather M. Bynum (see Attachment #5
After discussion, and on a motion by Dr. Bounds and a second by Dr. Raines the petition of Heather M. Bynum was unanimously denied.
7. Petition of Amber Marie Ash (see Attachment #6).
After discussion, and on a motion by Dr. McCaffrey and a second by Dr. Cleland, the petition of Amber Marie Ash was unanimously denied. Council members suggested that Ms. Ash should investigate an independent study course in Spanish 102 through the University to complete her degree requirements.
8. Adjournment. The Council adjourned at 1:45 p.m.
