MINUTES OF THE UNDERGRADUATE COUNCIL
1 p.m., Friday, September 7, 2007 in Lyceum 110
PRESENT: Dr. Canty, Dr. Bush, Dr. Cleland, Dr. Murchison, Dr. Lackey, Dr. Irvin for Ms. Mizenko, Dr. Watt, Dr. Raines, Dr. McCaffrey, Mr. Upton, and Mr. Rollins
ABSENT: Dr. Fant, Dr. Wilder, Ms. Bounds
1. Approval of Minutes.
The Chair announced that Chancellor Khayat has approved the email ballot minutes of June 4 without exception.
The Chair announced that the Council of Academic Administrators unanimously approved the addition of new courses in Biology, English, Modern Languages, Public Policy Leadership and Theatre Arts, and other catalog changes by email ballot (see Attachment #3).
The Chair announced that the Council of Academic Administrators unanimously approved the proposed academic calendar for 2008-2009 (see Attachment #4).
The Chair announced that the Council of Academic Administrators unanimously approved the petition of Shaneka Jones by email ballot (see Attachment #5).
2. Courses (see Attachment #1).
On a motion by Dr. McCaffrey and a second by Dr. Raines, the Council unanimously approved the course changes for the College of Liberal Arts and for the departments of Social Work and Family and Consumer Sciences in the School of Applied Sciences.
3. Other Catalog Changes (see Attachment #2).
On a motion by Dr. Bush and a second by Dr. McCaffrey, the Council took up the catalog changes in attachment #2 in the College of Liberal Arts and in the departments of Family and Consumer Sciences and Communicative Disorders in the School of Applied Sciences, except for the changes relating to the Master of Music degree and the Ph.D in Music degree, which were not appropriately before the Council.
On a motion by Dr. Cleland and a second by Mr. Rollins, the council unanimously approved an amendment to the other catalog changes for the College of Liberal Arts on page one of Attachment #2, which substituted the phrases “First-level studio core: take 5 of the following”: and “Second-level studio core: take 6 of the following”: for the phrases “First-level studio core: take 5 of the following 6 courses” and Second-level studio core: take 5 of the following 7 courses”: in the Curriculum for the B.F.A. Degree in Art - Studio Arts.
On a motion by Mr. Rollins and a second by Dr. Bush, the Council unanimously approved an amendment to the other catalog changes for the College of Liberal Arts on page five of Attachment #2 to disapprove adding Environmental Studies 101 as a course that undergraduate students may use to satisfy the humanities’ requirement. Further discussion noted that Environmental Studies 101 was previously approved as a new course, but the course description was not immediately available to Council members, and more information can be presented about the course at the next Council meeting. The Council unanimously tabled this proposed change, with the request that the School of Applied Sciences provide information relating to the reason for this change.
After further discussion and as amended, the original motion to approve catalog changes in attachment #2 was unanimously approved.
4. Implementation of New Accreditation Standards and Guidelines for all Pharmacy Professional Degree Programs - School of Pharmacy (see Attachment #6).
Dr. McCaffrey presented proposed changes for the School of Pharmacy regarding new accreditation standards along with a plan for implementation. After discussion and on a motion by Mr. Rollins and a second by Dr. Bush, the Council unanimously approved the Pharmacy changes.
5. Petition of Carl Blair Moore (see Attachment #7).
After discussion, and on a motion by Dr. Cleland and a second by Dr. McCaffrey, the Council disapproved the petition of Mr. Moore. There was one abstention.
6. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 1:45 p.m.
