Graduate Writing Consultations

How to Prepare for an Effective Writing Consultation

The University of Mississippi Writing Center’s services are based upon the philosophy expressed by Stephen M. North in his landmark essay “The Idea of a Writing Center.”

“[I]n a writing center the object is to make sure that writers, and not necessarily their texts, are what get changed by instruction.”

This means that the Writing Center is not a proofreading service and we do not offer drop-off/pick-up services. You should prepare to spend about one hour in a writing consultation after we have read your document.

We invite graduate students to make appointments for writing consultations well in advance of a document due date. Keep in mind that, like your professors, our busiest times are at the conclusion of each semester. We writers are notorious procrastinators.

Please have specific questions on which you wish to focus. For example, do you need special help with English as a Second Language? Do you need assistance with research documentation? What comments or instructions have you received from your director?

All papers must be word processed

The due date is essential.

Remember that we will make suggestions concerning your writing but final decisions should always be made by you and your director or committee.
