Writing Consultation Policies

Making Appointments for Writing Consultations

Consultations are available by appointment only. Papers must be printed, double-spaced, spell-checked, and in a font size no smaller than 12. When you make an appointment we will need to know the length of your document and the due date.

ESL Consultants 2003-2004

Carter Hillyer

 Damir Mehmedic
 dmehmedi@olemiss.edu

Office hours will be posted outside the Graduate Student Writing Center office or telephone 915-7686 to arrange an appointment.

Paper Length and Appointment Times

Two pages or less: Please schedule appointments with the Writing Center’s undergraduate tutors through the Web Appointment Calendar at http://writingc.olemiss.edu/registration/login.php

Five pages or less: Schedule a one hour appointment with Carter Hillyer or Damir Mehmedic by calling 915-7686. Bring your paper with you to the scheduled appointment.

Longer than five pages: Schedule a two hour appointment with Carter Hillyer or Damir Mehmedic by calling 915-7686. Deliver your paper to the Writing Center in an envelope or folder two to three days in advance of the scheduled appointment. This allows us time to read and correct your work. We can discuss the proposed changes and any writing problems in the meeting.

Keeping Appointments

Due to the great demand for ESL services and the time required to edit papers, graduate students who do not keep appointments made with the Graduate ESL consultants will not be allowed to make use of this service again.

Avoiding Problems

The procedure of submitting documents via email to have them “fixed” contradicts the Writing Center’s purpose as a place of learning and the Graduate School’s goal to provide quality education.

We are often unable to meet “last minute” demands for writing consultations, especially at the end of the semester when many students seek assistance with seminar papers, theses, and dissertations. We suggest that ESL graduate students plan to complete their research and writing in advance.
