Blackboard

Blackboard is a Web-based software application for supporting online courses and supplementing on-campus classes. It is a great way to post presentations, facilitate out-of-class discussions and teamwork, as well as post daily grades securely using the Blackboard gradebook. Blackboard is currently available at blackboard.olemiss.edu. Faculty can set up a Blackboard course through the Class Rolls and Grades interface of myolemiss.edu which includes a service that allows instructors to "Blackboard Enable" sections they are teaching. Creating Web Pages

All faculty, staff, and students are given space on Sunset for development of a personal Web page. All personal Web pages must adhere to the Appropriate Use Policy.

Departmental and course Web pages are housed on Cedar. To apply for a cedar account, click here. Departmental Web pages must comply with the Policy for Official Web Pages.

UM Webmasters will want to visit The UM Web Project. This page provides lots of helpful information on creating Web pages, as well as provides Web page templates that are available for download.

Course Mailing Lists

Mailing lists can be effective means for facilitating communication among class members. A mailing list is an e-mail reflector; members subscribe to the list and postings are automatically distributed to all members. To set up a course mailing list, e-mail assist@olemiss.edu. Please provide the desired mailing list and a brief description of how it will be used.

Faculty Technology Development Center

Located in Weir Hall, the FTDC offers software, hardware, and one-on-one assistance for improving your classroom presentations and other projects. Detailed information on the FTDC is available through the FTDC Web page.

Faculty Test Scanning

Faculty have access to an Op-Scan test scanner for their faculty test scoring needs. This scanner requires the "purple" form #16485. The scanner is located in the Weir Hall Microcomputer Lab, room 115. Specifics about the scanner are available at www.olemiss.edu/depts/ftdc/testscanning.html.

Internet2 / ACCESS GRID

UM maintains a connection to Internet2 providing access from most campus PCs to this high-speed, research network. UM's own ACCESS GRID Node is an immersive video conferencing facility, available free-of-charge to faculty for distance-based lectures or remote research collaboration.

Mathematica Site License

UM has a Site License for Mathematica which entitles any UM affiliated faculty or staff member to load this software on their office, lab, or home computer. Full-time UM students may also install a copy on their own computers.

Mississippi Center for Supercomputing Research

Located on the UM campus, the MCSR provides high-performance computing support to the faculty, professional staff, and students at the eight state-supported senior institutions of higher learning in Mississippi and the UM Medical Center, all governed by the Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning. The MCSR currently supports a Cray C916 system (magnolia), an SGI Origin 2800 computer (sweetgum), an SGI Altix 3700 supercomputer (redwood), a 251-node Intel Linux Beowulf cluster computer, and an Sun Enterprise 420R computer (willow). Ole Miss Faculty Experts Guide

The Ole Miss Faculty Experts Guide, located at www.olemiss.edu/experts, lists the specialty areas of our diverse faculty, who are available for expert commentary on breaking news or feature stories on hundreds of topics. Faculty can edit their Areas of Expertise through the My Profile area of myOleMiss.

myOleMiss

Faculty can download class rolls, check for open and closed sections of courses, Blackboard enable a course, and access accounts receivable information through a Web interface made available by the IT SAP Support group. To access these services, connect to myOleMiss and click on the Faculty and Class Info tabs.

Public Access Labs

The Galtney Center for Academic Computing, located in Weir Hall, is maintained by the Office of Information Technology. The computer lab provides free student access to more than 50 computers featuring Windows XP Professional operating systems. Software includes Microsoft Office with Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word. Other software applications include SPSS, SAS, MathXL, Chemdraw, and Mathematica. The lab also has 12 Macintosh computer systems. Lab staff are available to provide assistance as needed across the entire spectrum of computer operating systems and application software. Site License Software

IT manages several software site license programs for the UM campus including Mathematica, Virus protection, Sun ScholarPac and the SGI Varsity Program. Other site license software is available for at-cost rates including SAS/PC, SPSS/PC and certain Visual Numerics applications. Microsoft Office Professional and Adobe software products are available through the Faculty Technology Development Center.

Technology Training

IT Support Services consultants regularly present technical seminars to faculty and staff. Included in this offering are seminars on Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Mathematica, Scanning, Photoshop, Editing Digital Video, Creating DVDs, Mailing Lists, Creating Web Pages, Dreamweaver, and more.

Technical Assistance

The Academic Computing and Enterprise Applications (ACEA) division of Information Technology (IT) provides a wide variety of technical services for UM faculty. The IT Helpdesk, located in Weir Hall , provides frontline technical support for the UM campus. The IT Helpdesk staff can be reached by phone at 915-5222 or via e-mail at helpdesk@olemiss.edu.
