April Taylor Broussard

April Taylor, 19, of Smithdale said she became an Ole Miss Women’s Council scholarship because she thought it would give her a way to flourish while at college.

“I’m a very in-my-shell kind of person,” said the freshman English major. “I thought the servant leadership program would help me come out of my shell.”

Taylor said the servant leader aspect was particularly interesting because in high school her leadership roles were in the form of serving as a secretary or treasurer. She said she already has gained a new perspective on leadership roles from OMWC events.

“They made me feel like it was OK to be behind-the-scenes. It’s OK to be me and be a leader,” she said.

Taylor said after graduating, she wants to teach English and journalism at the high school level. She said she plans on taking the examples in the OMWC and applying them during her career.

“I want to know that I influenced my students. I want to help people. I want to make people realize their self-worth. I want them to realize how important they are so they can give it their all.”
