Praxis Series

Three Levels of Assessment:
Praxis I
Praxis II
Praxis III

PRAXIS II Fee Waiver

What is the Praxis?
The Praxis Series is an Educational Testing Service (ETS) program that provides tests and other services for states to use as part of their teacher certification process. The Praxis Series assessments are also used by colleges and universities to qualify individuals for entry into teacher education programs. A number of professional associations and organizations also use these tests.

Three Levels of Assessments
The three categories of assessments in The Praxis Series correspond to the three milestones in your development as a teacher: entering a teacher training program, graduating from college and entering the profession, and your first year of teaching.

Praxis I:

Academic Skills Assessments are designed to be taken early in your college career to measure your reading, writing, and mathematical skills. The Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPSTŪ) in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics are available in two formats, each measuring the basic academic skills vital to all teacher candidates. Many states and institutions accept scores based on either format:

The paper-based tests in Reading and Mathematics are one-hour multiple-choice tests. The Writing test includes both a 30-minute multiple-choice and a 30-minute essay section.

The computer-based tests in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing contain computer-delivered questions that require selecting single responses or highlighting information. The Writing test includes an essay section. Each testing session is two hours to allow sufficient time for tutorials on computer use, the test itself, and the collection of background information for score reporting.

Praxis II:

Subject Assessments measure your knowledge of the subjects you will teach.

The Praxis II: Subject Assessments include:

Subject Assessments/Specialty Area Tests. These assessments measure your general and subject specific pedagogical skills and knowledge.

Multiple Subjects Assessment for Teachers (MSAT). These tests were developed jointly by ETS and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Tests. These assessments use a case study approach to measure your general pedagogical knowledge at four grade levels: Early Childhood, K-6, 5-9, and 7-12. The tests feature constructed response and multiple-choice items.

Teaching Foundations Tests

These assessments measure pedagogy in five areas:

  • Multi-subject (elementary),
  • English Language
  • Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Science

These tests feature constructed response and multiple choice items.

Fee Waiver

If you are receiving financial aid and are an enrolled undergraduate or graduate student and meet the income guidelines, you may be eligible for a fee waiver. The test you are registering for must be required by an authorized score recipient. You are ineligible if you have a master's or a doctorate. To be considered for a fee waiver, submit a completed Fee Waiver Request form and registration form to be received at ETS by the appropriate deadline.

If you qualify, your $35 registration fee and one test fee may be waived. However, test takers in Louisiana, Ohio, and Nevada must still pay those states' surcharges. Furthermore, special service fees, such as late fees, cannot be waived.

A limited number of waivers are available per test date and per institution.

All fee waiver requests are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. You are eligible for a fee waiver only once during a testing year. If your request is approved, your registration form will be processed and you will receive an admission ticket. If funds are not available for the test date requested, you may indicate on the form the action to be taken. (ETS recognizes the right of individuals to privacy with regard to information supplied by and about them that may be stored in files, and the concomitant responsibility to safeguard information in its files from unauthorized disclosure.)

For complete instructions, income guide and form go to the ETS web site at www.ets.org/praxis/index.html.
