Taylor Carnes
Major: Geological Engineering
GSIP Project: Water Conservation and Management
Taylor Carnes is a native of Memphis, TN. She is a sophomore majoring in Geological Engineering. Taylor is an active member on the Ole Miss campus as well as in the Oxford community. Last year, she conducted research for a water waste management program that led to the installation of new hydration stations across the Oxford campus. These new stations have created an efficient way for students to abandon the use of plastic water bottles in favor of environmentally friendly reusable containers. Outside of the GSIP program, she is also a member of Associated Student Body and Students for a Green Campus. After graduation, Taylor plans to use her degree in geological engineering to venture into the field of environmental protection and remediation.
Sarah Gehring
Major: Dietetics
GSIP Project: Green Events
Sarah Gehring is a junior dietetics major from Hernando, Mississippi. Sarah is an active volunteer for many groups in the Oxford community as well as on campus at Ole Miss. She has volunteered at the local hospital and at the Oxford Lafayette Recycling Center. She has served as secretary of the National Society of Leadership and is also a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and Students for a Green Campus. Sarah also works as a desk receptionist in the new Residential College and is active in the Student Dietetic Association and in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. Sarah has researched and created a roadmap for the university's dining services to integrate more sustainable practices into its operations in the future. She has also worked to implement Green Week 2011 and Green Cup 2011.
Abby Olivier
Major: Public Policy and Leadership, Southern Studies minor
GSIP Project: Eco-Champion
Abby Olivier is a Junior from Hattiesburg, Mississippi majoring in Public Policy Leadership with a minor in Southern Studies. She is a member of the Trent Lott Leadership Institute and The Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. Fall 2010 was Abby's first semester in the GSIP, and her focus is on proposing and implementing the "Eco Champion" program which will allow RAs at Ole Miss to become a "green leader" within their residence halls. Abby has volunteered with the Leap Frog program and The Exchange Club in Oxford. She has committed much of her time to the Associated Student Body, Ole Miss Ambassadors, and Orientation Leader. She is Vice-President of Operations in her sorority.
Cory Washington
Major: Communication Sciences and Disorder
GSIP Project: E-Waste, Alternative Transportation Initiatives
Cory Washington is a native a Madison, MS. He is a Junior Communication Sciences and Disorder major with an emphasis in Speech Language Pathology. Cory is involved extensively at the University. He is currently a part of the Associated Student Body where he serves as the Director of Student Services for Sustainability. He is also apart of the Oxford University Transit System Board of Commissioners where he has the title of the Student Liaison. Cory is currently working with Bike Give Back, Rebel Pedals, and eWaste alternatives. In his spare time, besides studying, Cory loves to read and surf the internet.
Brent Caldwell, Fall 2009

GSIP Project: Rebel Pedals and Car-Share Program
Brent Caldwell is a native of St. Martin, Mississippi whose interest in sustainability was generated by his father, Michael, who is an avid outdoorsman, and his time in the Boy Scouts. He has been heavily involved in greening the Ole Miss campus since his freshman year when he worked with Dr. Linda Spargo in the Chancellor’s Office to implement a pilot program of recycling in the Grove. Brent later approached the Associated Student Body about the possibility of creating a campus bicycle sharing program and continues that work today as the GSIP intern focusing on managing and expanding the Rebel Pedals bike-share program. Brent is a senior studying Philosophy and Public Policy Leadership and hopes to spend his career advancing progressive politics in the South.
Andre' Cotten, Spring 2010
Major: Public Policy Leadership and English
GSIP Project: Rebel Pedals and Alternative Transportation
Andre’ Cotten is a native of Madison, MS. He is a Senior double majoring in Public Policy Leadership and English. Andre’ has been very active on campus through his service with the Associated Student Body. As the Co-Director of Student Services he worked to help implement Rebel Pedals and to promote its use by organizing several outreach events on campus. His involvement with the GSIP program will be working to help establish a comprehensive ride share program that includes Zimride, Zipcar, and a further development of the bike share program. In addition, in conjunction with the ASB and the Office of Sustainability he will be working to create a Daily Mississippian Recycling Program and to institute Bike Refurbishment Policy that would allow students without transportation the opportunity to receive a refurbished bike.
Stephanie Jabaley, Fall 2009 - Fall 2010
Major: Business
GSIP Project: Green Business Alliance Program
Stephanie Jabaley is a sophomore Business major with a minor in Political Science from Fairfax, Virginia. Stephanie is working with local business owners and community leaders to establish a Green Business Alliance program, a model that she hopes to implement statewide. Stephanie has experience in cost analysis and change management as an intern for Booz Allen Hamilton, a major consulting firm in Mclean, Virginia. Stephanie also has a specific interest in how social networking and Web 2.0 applications can be utilized to support organizational change management. She is a student in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and the historian for her sorority.
Jonathan D. Jones, Fall 2009 - Spring 2010
Major: Chemical Engineering
GSIP Project: Smart Synch/Energy Management Program
Jonathan is a junior chemical engineering major from Long Beach, Mississippi. He is working with the Office of Sustainability during the Fall 2009 semester on enhancing the university’s energy management program. Jonathan is working alongside the University Physical Plant and UM’s smart grid partner, SmartSynch, to accurately gauge power consumption and develop strategies that improve operational efficiencies. Outside the GSIP program, Jonathan is a scholar of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and the Ole Miss Women’s Council. He also works with the Engineering Student Body and is helping to establish the Ole Miss Engineers Without Borders organization. After graduation he plans to teach high school math and science for two years and then venture into the engineering profession to work in smart grid/energy market.
Elizabeth Seratt, Fall 2009
Major: International Studies and German
GSIP Project: 350.org and UM’s Climate Action Plan
Elizabeth Seratt, a freshman international studies and German major, grew up in Greenville, Mississippi. Although her parents now live a little ways down Highway 61 in Vicksburg, she will always consider Greenville and the Delta home. She greatly enjoys outdoor activities, sleeping, reading and expanding her collections of aprons and Buddhas. Elizabeth has a lifelong goal to visit every continent, but for now, she’ll be content with pursuing her goal of becoming a Brothers Grimm scholar, environmental proponent, professional student, and writer. Elizabeth is leading the implementation of the UM’s 350.org project, which focuses on building awareness on global warming. She will also be helping the university in the development of UM’s long-term climate action plan.
Elliott Warren, Fall 2009 - Fall 2010

GSIP Project: Gameday Recycling Program
Elliott is a junior public policy and leadership major from Brookhaven High School in Brookhaven, Mississippi. He has been a Chancellor and Deans list honor student and is an active member of several organizations on campus, including the Trent Lott Leadership Institute, Ole Miss College Republicans, Ole Miss Students for a Greener Campus, Hope for Africa, Ole Miss chapters of Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl, and the Sigma Chi fraternity. Elliott has volunteered with Big Brother/Big Sister in Oxford and attends College Hill Presbyterian Church in Oxford. In his spare time he enjoys running, cycling, and hunting & fishing. Elliott will be leading UM’s gameday recycling efforts in the Grove this fall and hopes to establish a recycling program that can be applied for any major events that occur on campus in the future.
