What is Tableau?

random graphs Tableau produces a suite of products, including a desktop platform and a mobile platform. We foresee two sets of users at UM: those who will primarily view and interact with reports, and those who will produce reports for others. Due to the expense of Tableau Desktop, we have a limited pool of licenses for "producers," but a we have virtually unlimited seats for "viewers" on our Tableau Server.

Tableau Desktop runs locally on your Mac or PC and allows you to quickly see patterns, identify trends, and discover insights from your existing data. Tableau connects directly to your data sources (Excel, SQL, SAP server feeds, etc.), both static and live, allowing you to filter data dynamically and perform calculations on existing data, without wizards, scripts, or writing code. Analysis happens visually, by producing interactive tables, charts, and dashboards that opens your data for exploration. These visualizations are often referred to as "vizzes".

Once you've explored your data, you can share your insights with others by publishing your vizzes to Tableau Server. Server provides a common portal for browsing vizzes by project. We are creating projects that loosely correspond to administrative roles and organizational lines. Generally, IREP and IT will create vizzes for the role based projects, while departments/schools will have dedicated projects for their area content producers to publish to. Our goal is to facilitate collaboration so helpful vizzes created by a particular organizational unit may be adopted for publication to a wider audience.

Tableau Mobile is a free iOS and Android app that connects to Tableau Server to provide further optimization of the viewer experience over mobile web browsers.

Vizable is Tableau's latest mobile product and offers self-service analytics directly on your mobile device. Although elegant and powerful, Vizable doesn't directly connect to Tableau Server and is so only useful with standalone datasets.

How do I get access to Tableau?

Viewers will have access to vizzes published on the Ole Miss Tableau server at tableau.olemiss.edu using their existing WebID accounts.

Producers will create vizzes in Tableau Desktop and publish to our server. A good rule of thumb: if you know what a pivot table is, you will likely be able to make use of Tableau Desktop. Licenses are limited, but you may request one through the following form.

Instructors who wish to use Tableau within a course may request a free Tableau Desktop license.

Students may also request a free Tableau Desktop.

What is new in Tableau?

The current version of Tableau Desktop is 2022.4 which was released December 14, 2022. Read about the current and upcoming features.

How do I install and activate Tableau Desktop?

Installation is a fairly straight forward process. Download the software and begin running the installation package. After installation, run the application and you will be asked to activate the application. Assuming you already have been assigned a license (see above), start the activation process:

  1. Select the option to "Activate by signing in to a server."
  2. Enter "https://tableau.olemiss.edu" for the server and press the Connect button.
  3. If asked to sign in, do so with your WebID account.

Upon successful activation, you will be asked to register the product. Simply enter your name and information on that screen.

If you have already been using Tableau Desktop but have not yet activated it, launch the application and go to Help and select Manage Product Keys. Press Activate and then follow the steps above.

Note that if you update your software, you will be asked to register the new version again, but your information and the activation settings should still all be in place.
