Basic Modern Language Sequences

Several sequence options are available in languages offered by the Department of Modern Languages. The option which a student chooses depends first on the language and then on the amount of high school instruction the student has had in the language.

OPTION 1 (German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish)

101 (3 hours) → 102 (3 hours) → 201 (3 hours) → 202 (3 hours)

Important: The 101/102/201/202 sequence in Spanish is intended for students with fewer than 2 years of high school instruction in the language. Students with 2 or more years of high school instruction in Spanish who register for 101 will be dropped from the course.


OPTION 2 (Spanish)

121 (3 hours) → 201 (3 hours) → 202 (3 hours)

Important: The 121/201/202 sequence is intended for students with 2 or more years of high school instruction in the language.


OPTION 3 (French, German, Spanish)

111 (6 hours) → 211 (6 hours)


OPTION 4 (Japanese)

101/103 (4 hours) → 102/104 (4 hours) → 201/203 (4 hours) → 202/204 (4 hours)


OPTION 5 (German, Japanese, Russian)

111 (6 hours) → 201 (3 hours) → 202 (3 hours)

Important: Students in this sequence will enroll in dedicated sections of 201 and 202.


OPTION 6 (Arabic, Chinese)

111 (5 hours) → 112 (5 hours) → 211 (5 hours) → 212 (5 hours)
