College of Liberal Arts
Summer Research Grants
Guidelines, Summer 2008
PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION
The College of Liberal Arts Summer Research Grants are awarded competitively to tenured and tenure-track faculty members in the College. They are intended to support scholarly and creative activities likely to result in a significant contribution to the discipline. The projects should be consistent with research or creative activities described in departmental promotion and tenure guidelines. Proposals for projects to develop or refine pedagogy or that seek support for the communication of research results (e.g., to attend meetings) will not be considered. The value of the award is $6,000. The number of awards available each year will be based on availability of funds.
ELIGIBILITY
The awards are open to all tenured and tenure-track faculty in the College of Liberal Arts who will be employed by the University in 2008-09, except for those who hold named chairs, those who have received two consecutive College research grants for summer 2006 and 2007, and those who receive summer research grants from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for 2008. Faculty members may receive both a departmental award (some departments have such awards) and a College of Liberal Arts award. However, in the interest of fairness, the College review committee may rank proposals from those who have received other awards lower than worthy proposals from unfunded faculty members. Please list all funds requested or received for this project. Performance on past summer research grants will be used as an evaluation criterion in such cases.
Grant recipients may not teach more than one course during the summer, which includes May and August intercession. A final report describing the accomplishments during the summer will be due by September 29 of the year in which the grant is awarded. If a final report is not submitted, the faculty member is not eligible to receive a future summer research grant.
SUBMISSION AND REVIEW PROCEDURE
Applications should be prepared according to the instructions on the application form, which is available on the College of Liberal Arts website. Applications will be evaluated and ranked by the department chair. Department chairs may use an advisory committee. Six copies of each application and of the chair’s evaluation and ranking will be submitted to the Office of the Dean. Proposals that are not ranked or that arrive without the chair’s comments will not be considered.
The Dean will appoint a review committee composed of five department chairs. The committee will review all proposals and forward to the Dean a recommendation regarding which proposals should be funded. The committee will also advise the Dean about the review process and perform other duties as assigned.
The deadlines for the 2008 summer research grant program are as follows:
| December 14, 2007 | Proposals submitted by department chairs to Dean |
| January 18, 2008 | Awards announced |
| September 29, 2008 | Final Reports for Summer Grants due to Dean |
