UM Plans to Improve Student Writing

The University of Mississippi will soon devote more attention and energy to improving student writing. After a two-year discussion among students, teachers, alumni, and others, the university has created a detailed plan (called the Quality Enhancement Plan, or QEP) to improve writing instruction and support. In the next five years, the university will 1) update the first-year writing curriculum; 2) offer more writing assistance to students outside of class; and 3) give greater support to faculty who teach writing. Details of the ambitious plan include an expansion of the existing writing center and the adoption of electronic portfolios, which make it easier for students to write, save, and share their work.
