University of Mississippi Adopts Plus/Minus Grading Scale
The University administration recently approved a plan for implementing the previously adopted plus/minus grading scale. The grade scale, which will be implemented in Fall 2011 for all undergraduate and graduate courses, is as follows:
Letter Grade |
Value Points |
A |
4.0 |
A- |
3.7 |
B+ |
3.3 |
B |
3.0 |
B- |
2.7 |
C+ |
2.3 |
C |
2 |
C- |
1.7 |
D |
1 |
F |
0 |
As a matter of principle, it is always an instructor’s prerogative to decide whether to use +/- grades or not. However, this will be the official university scale. Instructors will be strongly encouraged to include a careful description of a course’s grading scale in the syllabus.
There are some course or program prerequisites that require a minimum grade, typically stated such as the following example: “minimum grade of C or better.” Those prerequisites will not be changed by the new grading scale unless otherwise modified by the relevant College or school.
