University of Mississippi Adopts Plus/Minus Grading Scale
The University administration approved a plan for implementing a plus/minus grading scale. The grade scale, which will be implemented in Fall 2011 for all undergraduate and graduate courses, is as follows:
| Letter Grade |
Value Points |
A |
4.0 |
A- |
3.7 |
B+ |
3.3 |
B |
3.0 |
B- |
2.7 |
C+ |
2.3 |
C |
2.0 |
C- |
1.7 |
D |
1.0 |
F |
0 |
While this will be the official university grade scale, it is always an instructor’s prerogative to decide whether to use plus/minus grades. Instructors are strongly encouraged to include a careful description of their grading scale in the course syllabus.
There are some course prerequisites or program requirement for a minimum grade in a course, typically stated as: “minimum grade of C or better….” This prerequisite will not be changed by the new grading scale unless otherwise modified by the relevant College or school. In these cases, a student may receive a C- but this course will not satisfy the requirement of a “minimum grade of C or better.”
