Optional Minor for the Bachelor of Science Degree
Beginning with the Fall 2012, students completing the Bachelor of Science degree may choose to complete an optional minor that will show on their UM transcript. Required hours for the B.S. degree in the “Related Subjects” category can be counted as hours toward a minor.
As an example, a student completing the B.S. in Chemistry will take a required 15 credit hours of mathematics courses, which help satisfy the required 18 hours of related subjects in mathematics or physics. If the student wishes to complete the optional minor in mathematics, then he or she would look up the requirements for the mathematics minor, which are, in fact, fully satisfied by those 15 credit hours required by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Without taking any additional mathematics courses, the student may place the mathematics minor on the transcript. Other examples might require the student to take a few more classes to complete the optional minor.
The same list of minors is available for the B.S. and the B.A. students in the College. See the “B.A. College Specific and Collegewide Degree Requirements” section of the Fall 2012 Undergraduate Catalog for information on completing a minor.
