Faulkner’s Burial

Faulkner's Burial
© The Cofield Collection
Faulkner was buried in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Oxford on July 7, 1962, the day after he died in Byhalia, Mississippi. The Falkner family plot, where his grandparents, parents, youngest brother and infant daughter were buried, was full, so his grave was located elsewhere just below a hillside and beneath the canopy of several white oak trees. In keeping with Faulkner’s usual habits, the family issued an appeal for privacy: “Until he is buried he belongs to the family. After that, he belongs to the world.”
