The following events all happened during this week in Mississippi history. Year: 1893: Writer Lalla Scott was born in Collins, Mississippi. (Jan. 25) 1895: Poet Muna Lee was born in Raymond, Mississippi. (Jan. 29) 1927: William Faulkners Mayday, a hand-lettered tale, was presented to Helen Baird, for whom it was written. (Jan. 27) 1933: Theologian Louis W. Hodges was born in Eupora, Mississippi. (Jan. 24) 1934: Advertising executive Peter Rodgers was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. (Jan. 24) 1941: William Faulkner published Go Down, Moses in Colliers. (Jan. 25) 1944: Editor and biographer James Morgan was born in Jackson, Mississippi. (Jan. 24) 1948: Folklorist John Alan Lomax died in Greenville, Mississippi. (Jan. 26) 1955: William Faulkner accepted the National Book Award for Fiction for A Fable. (Jan. 25) 1969: The musical Peace, book and lyrics by playwright Timothy Reynolds with music by Al Carmines, a translation of a play by Aristophanes, was first produced Off-Broadway at the Astor Place Theatre in New York. (Jan. 27) 1997: English professor and biographer Thomas Daniel Young died of complications following abdominal surgery in Bay Springs, Mississippi. (Jan. 29)

Through Feb. 29, 2004: National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. Passionate Observer: Photographs by Eudora Welty, highlighting over 50 of Welty’s black-and-white photographs from the 1930s, will be exhibited at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Mississippi Library Commission seeks book nominations Each year the Mississippi Library Commission authors committee requests from its members nominations of authors (born in Mississippi or having lived here for 5 years) who have written books they wish to honor. The committee reads and reviews these titles and selects at least two to be honored each year at our annual convention. April 1-4, 2004 The 11th Oxford Conference for the Book, in Oxford, Mississippi. Notable authors, editors, publishers and others in the trade gather with educators, literacy advocates and book lovers for panel discussions, readings and scholarly presentations. The 2003 conference is dedicated to Mississippian and author Walker Percy (1916-90). Sponsored by the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, Oxford Tourism Council, and Square Books. Free admission; preregistration recommended through the Center for Study of Southern Culture (www.olemiss.edu/depts/south/). June 17-20, 2004 Oxford Film Festival, in Oxford, Mississippi. Oxfords second annual community-sponsored film festival consists of 4 days of screenings, along with workshops on film-making, screen-writing, etc., for adults and children, juried professional independent and amateur films, presentations and awards. July 25-29, 2004 31st Annual Faulkner & Yoknapatawpha Conference, “Faulkner and Material Culture.” The University of Mississippi, Oxford, Mississippi.
