With the English no longer a threat to French colonies, King Louis XIV gives a fifteen-year charter to businessman Antoine Crozat for the economic exploitation of Louisiana and appoints a new governor, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who had served twenty-seven years in Canada and was at the time its lieutenant governor. Bienville will remain lieutenant governor in Louisiana.
