[News] November 9: Professor William R. Ferris was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate as chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

[Film] November 21: The Rainmaker, a film directed by Francis Coppola and based on the novel by John Grisham, premiered in the United States.

[Death] April 4: Poet Otis Williams, director of the Nyumburu Cultural Center at the University of Maryland, died suddenly in College Park, Maryland, at the age of 57.
