ASB's proposed fall break could benefit studentsThe fall semester is arguably the most stressful semester for faculty and students. For some, the long stretch from mid-August to Thanksgiving break feels like it will never end. The Associated Student Body has asked administrators to consider adding a fall break to the calendar next school year. The ASB's recommendation, which has been debated for almost five years, is an excellent idea. The proposal needs support from the Faculty Senate, the Undergraduate Council, the Academic Council and the Chancellor's Office in order to become a reality. Hopefully, these groups will understand the merits of a fall break and grant students something they've been requesting for a long time. A fall break would be a great opportunity for students to catch a breath midway through the fall. Who knows? Maybe it would even help improve a few grade point averages. A fall break could also give faculty members a chance to relax after midterms. Sometimes it's easy to forget that some faculty members work as hard as students study. The ASB's proposal is a simple request that shouldn't cause too much trouble for administrators. It doesn't cost anything, it doesn't imply less class days and it won't even interfere with football since the AS has asked for the break on a weekend without a home football game. The AS deserves a pat on the back for its resolution. Perhaps next year, AS members can enjoy the fruits of their work by having a couple's days rest in mid-October. If the fall break proposal gets the necessary approval to wind up on the chancellor's desk, it could be one of the ASB's best accomplishments of the year.
