New IFC officers inductedBrian Wiuff The new officers for the Inter Fraternity Council of 2000 took their oaths of office to uphold the standards of their fraternities, the IFC and the University of Mississippi Tuesday night in their first meeting of the new year at the Union. The officers were elected last semester and now take over for a one year term. The new officers are President Jason Savarese; Vice President of Education and Judicial Justin Dill; Vice President of Recruitment George Haymans; Secretary and Treasurer Case Embry; and Public Relations Chairman Manning McPhillips. "I think these people are going to do a great job. I have a lot of faith in them," said Alex Farlow, the departing president in his last meeting as executive officer. The new officers recently returned from the Greek Retreat in Olive Branch, where they discussed their plans and hopes for the upcoming year. The main focus of the IFC this semester will be "stressing unity between the fraternities and sororities," Savarese said Regarding the new year and new IFC leadership, Haymans said, "We look forward to working together with fraternities and sororities so that the Greek image is looked upon in a positive light." Another new idea that is being considered is a restructuring of Greek Week. In the past, individual organizations have each participated in separate philanthropic efforts. Staying true to his concept of Greek unity, Savarese said, "We're thinking of everyone doing the same philanthropy in Greek Week." He suggested the possibility of a Greek-wide cleanup. According to Dr. Alex Gresham, Assistant Dean of Students for Greek Life and Student Organizations, the Inter Fraternity Council acts a governing board for the 18 fraternities on the Ole Miss campus. Each organization is represented by two delegates of their choice. Along with governing responsibilities, the Council also discusses Rush, philanthropies, and judicial matters at its bi-weekly meetings. The IFC hopes to be able to better able to handle the affairs and problems of its member organizations itself this year. "We're trying to take fraternities at the University of Mississippi out of the shadow of the 'Animal House' stereotype," Council member Jebh Llewellyn said.
