Five arrested in connection with drugs

Cocaine seized by federal and local officials in Oxford

Federal, state and local authorities arrested five people on Wednesday and charged them with possession with intent to distribute cocaine in what could be one of the largest-ever drug busts in North Mississippi.

The intersection of Jackson Avenue and Highway 6 claimed the life of Ole Miss student Artisa Cooley on Jan. 23. In the first four months of 1999, there were 11 accidents at the intersection, resulting in the deaths of two people.

Freshman quarterback Eli Manning and teammate Justin Wade, who were both arrested and charged with public drunkeness and disorderly conduct last weekend, have received a public scolding from Rebel head coach David Cutcliffe.

University challenged to become safe for all

During the first week of class a number of fliers were hung throughout campus that challenged the university community to take additional action regarding a number of incidents that occurred last semester. The fliers have appeared in both the Oxford Eagle and The Daily Mississippian. The Sarah Isom Center Steering Committee, concerned with several safety issues that occurred last semester, were responsible for both.

Date rape drugs have serious consequences for students

The use of date rape drugs is a serious affair whose ramifications go well beyond expulsion. Carnelia Pettis Fondren, assistant district attorney for Lafayette County, spoke at a recent Brown Bag lecture sponsored by the Isom Center. She pointed out that date rape drugs can be potentially lethal.
