Rebel baseball team on a winning streakOle Miss defeats Abilene Christian Second Headline in Times BoldChris Price Ole Miss began a four-game home stand Thursday by defeating Abilene Christian University 9-3. The Rebels came out strong and scored four runs in the first inning. ACU cut the Rebel lead in half, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. The Wildcats added another run in the top of the fifth before Ole Miss put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning by adding five runs. "I was very pleased with the first and fifth innings," Ole Miss head coach Pat Harrison said. "We swung the bat well. We capitalized when we had runners in scoring position." The Rebels were led at the plate by sophomore left fielder Kris Cox, who went 3-3 with two runs, and junior designated hitter Carl Lafferty, who went 3-3 with two runs and an RBI. Senior first baseman Jude Voltz went 2-4, and tied a career game high of four RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Casey Fuller earned the win in his first career start for the Rebels. Fuller worked five innings and allowed only one earned run on three hits and three walks. Freshman pitcher Brett Young gave the Rebels an outstanding performance in middle relief by throwing 31 strikes on 41 pitches. "I was really impressed with the outing Young gave," Harrison said. "He's going to be a good pitcher for us." Ole Miss had three errors in the game, but Harrison said he was not worried by the play of his defense. He complemented a diving catch by senior center fielder Chad Hill that stole what appeared to be a Wildcat base hit. "We play a very good defense," Harrison said. "They talk and communicate very well with each other." Ole Miss will square off against Louisiana Tech this weekend in a three-game series at Swayze Field. The first game begins today at 4 p.m.
