David Wharton is one of the many members of the Ole Miss faculty who has chosen not only to teach, but to pursue a literary career also.
Wharton, director of documentary projects and assistant professor of southern studies at Ole Miss, will be reading and signing his book, The Soul of a Small Texas Town, at Off Square Books tonight at 5 p.m.
The reading will begin with 30 minutes of greeting and signing, with the reading at approximately 5:30 p.m. Generally, the authors read for 30 minutes, however, they are not restricted. They are allowed to read as little or much as they please.
Between 1984 and 1989, Wharton photographed and collected stories of the citizens of McDade, Texas. He also studied the town's history.
Jamie Kornegay and Slade Lewis, spokesmen from Off Square Books, believe that the reading will draw a crowd, particularly the Ole Miss students and faculty.
"I believe that the reading will draw a large crowd because it is a great book, but because of the heat, you never know," Lewis said.
