Helpers needed for Move-In

As the Department of Student Housing and Residence Life prepares for Move-In Saturday, on August 19, it is hoping for a few good volunteers.

"We are looking for anyone who is willing to help out," said Bonnie Reid, the Move-In coordinator.

These days are important not only to Student Housing but also to Ole Miss because they get things off to a good start between students and school, according to the housing department.

"People feel welcomed, and it provides assistance to the process," Reid said.

The sign-up deadline for the event is today. As of Tuesday Reid had about 30 faculty and staff members signed up. Chancellor Robert Khayat is included in the volunteers. Reid said she wants to have 250 helpers for the fourth annual Move-In Day.

Student organizations have established a tradition of extending a helping hand in the past, according to Reid, but the information on the occasion was sent out late this year.

"I know that all the student organizations haven't had time to respond," Reid said.

"I anticipate that we will get five to 10 volunteers each day for the next several days."

People who are willing to show groups various areas around campus are also needed. Students will be selecting classes and shown around to their teacher's offices.

Included among the responsibilities that volunteers may share that day are directing traffic, helping in parking, greeting arriving families, staffing Information Centers, assisting with residence hall check-in, unloading vehicles, moving students' belongings to their rooms, serving refreshments and simply entertaining visitors.

Free T-shirts that will distinguish volunteers for Move-In will be given to those who volunteer. Breakfast and refreshments are part of the package, along with an appreciation luncheon slated for mid-September.

Any interested parties should contact the department as soon as possible for an application and selection of shift choice at 915-7369 or breid@olemiss.edu. The five-hour shifts last from 7 a.m. to noon and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Last year, approximately 200 people came out to aid the university on Move-In day.

Deborah Hodges Bell, an Ole Miss law professor, will lead a six hour seminar on Friday at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture.

This is the fourth year the seminar has been held.

The four topics being presented include an update on family law, Mississippi's alimony laws, child support collection and tax implications. This program is intended to help such audiences as practicing lawyers, law students and anyone who needs an update on Mississippi's laws.

"I think law students who would be interested in family law should attend this program," Bell said.

Other speakers scheduled for the program are James Koerber, C.P.A. from Hattiesburg and Darrell Baughn, staff attorney for the Mississippi department of Human Services.

The seminar will begin at 9 a.m. and end at about 4:45 p.m. Koerber will hold a workshop on tax considerations in drafting agreements before the lunch break at noon. When the program resumes, the remaining topics will be discussed. Baughn will conclude with a speech on new tools for child support enforcement.

The registration fee for attending the seminar if you pre-register by mail is $180. Registration at the door will cost $190 and will be on a space available basis.
